Dr. Deepa Chandran Ram is an intersectional and transnational author, artist, academic, and researcher. She holds a PhD in Science and is pursuing her Second PhD in Arts and Education, and currently lectures Chemistry and Physics.
Poetry, music and painting was in her veins from childhood and her life is a vibrant fusion of Art, Literature and Science.
Deepa Chandran Ram’s artistic practice is grounded in an ongoing exploration of emotional narration and self-reflexive inquiry—a journey she has recently conceptualized as part of an emerging movement she terms Autopathism. This practice translates deeply personal experiences, emotions, and narratives into visual form while engaging with broader cultural, philosophical, and intersectional discourses. Autopathism derives from three conceptual roots—auto (the self), pathos (emotion), and ism (a movement or ideology)—reflecting its commitment to emotions as epistemic tools and narrative as an aesthetic methodology.
Deepa’s work employs autoethnographic principles, drawing from the self not as an isolated subject but as a site of cultural, social, and historical intersections. In this way, her practice aligns with contemporary dialogues on identity, intersectionality, and embodied knowledge. Her visual language exists in a state of deliberate evolution, informed by introspective storytelling and experimental techniques that merge painting, mixed media, and conceptual frameworks.
Each artwork becomes an emotional cartography—mapping grief, resilience, joy, and transformation through layers of texture, symbolism, and form. Rather than privileging representation alone, Deepa seeks to create immersive visual narratives that invite viewers into a shared space of vulnerability and reflection. The theoretical foundations of her work draw on autoethnography as articulated by scholars such as Carolyn Ellis and Arthur Bochner, as well as the rhetorical power of pathos in Aristotelian philosophy. By situating her practice within these frameworks, she demonstrates that art can function not merely as an aesthetic object but as a methodology for understanding lived experience.
As her practice evolves, Deepa envisions Autopathism as more than a personal framework—it aspires to become a collective dialogue, engaging other artists, researchers, and communities in conversations that foreground emotion, intersectionality, and narrative agency. Through this approach, she seeks not only to create art but also to contribute to the broader cultural and intellectual discourse on how art can document and transform the human condition.
